Pure Primal Skincare

Last summer, Wiehan’s parents came to visit and they brought enough gifts to make us feel like it was Christmas in July! His sister sent over skincare products from a company called Pure Primal. I did what I always do when presented with skincare products: I read the ingredients. And I was floored! The Face Moisturizer contains Tallow from “Humanely raised, Locally sourced, Free Range, Grass Fed, nourishing animal Fat,” Shea Butter, Macadamia Nut & Olive Oil, Essential Oils of Lavender, Patchouli, Cedar, Geranium & Pomegranate Seed. That’s it! Just 9 ingredients. And no water, which actually dehydrates skins.

I have very sensitive skin, with a face prone to rosacea and hands and legs prone to eczema. A big eczema flare up is the reason I began to pursue food as medicine back in 2013. Since then I would normally just slather on coconut oil for skin hydration. And as a rule of thumb, I try not to put anything on my skin that I wouldn't put in my mouth, since skin is our largest detox organ and absorbs a large percentage of what we put on it. But I began using the Pure Primal Face Moisturizer and was hooked! It has a thick texture when you take a dollop from the container, but when rubbed between fingers, the fats begin to melt in a silky soft consistency. I gently rub the moisturizer on my face in the morning after a shower, and at night after washing my face. It has a very soft and refreshing scent and it feels like it’s protecting and nourishing my skin throughout the day and as I sleep. My sister-in-law also sent along their Fat Lips product, with Rooibos infused Grass Fed Tallow, Avocado Butter, Raw Beeswax, Olive Oil, Pomegranate seed oil. Ingredients are organic, where possible, and some like the tallow and olive oil are locally sourced. And if you're wondering, "what's so great about tallow?" then be sure to read Tallow Tales on Pure Primal's website. This winter, I began applying plain tallow straight to my hands, and it is the best moisturizer I have ever experienced. Normally in the winter, I suffer from painful, cracked fingertips and general dry skin all over my hands. But my hands have been in significantly better shape this year, which I credit to the tallow.

In addition to the face and lip moisturizers, I’m hooked on the Under Armor, with the scent of Lavender & Rose. Prior to finding this product, I used coconut oil and a drop of essential oil under my arms. But this works way better. When my stock of Pure Primal deodorant ran out, I used Primal Pit Paste as a backup. Rather than tallow, this product is vegan-friendly since it uses shea butter and coconut oil as the base. Those with sensitive skin should use it with caution however, as it contains baking soda, a potential skin irritant. More recently, I’ve made my own homemade deodorant recipe. And if you’re wondering how to make your own tallow check out my blog post on the subject here.

I really love the Pure Primal products listed above and the company’s sustainable practices. Too bad for those of us in the Northern Hemisphere, they're all the way in South Africa, so their products are not a locally sourced option. But if you're a resident of the Rainbow Nation, or if you ever find yourself visiting, look them up online or at one of their stockists! Thanks Pure Primal for making such incredible, high quality products!
